RICS - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is RICS?

RICS, or the Request Image Capture System, is specialised software developed by DDI Health to support and streamline workflows in pathology laboratories.

Why do you have two-stage interpretation?

RICS can use double-blind data entry across the first-, second- and/or third-stage data entry to ensure that key information—such as Tests, DOB, Billing and so on—is entered correctly. RICS can also be configured to capture and crosscheck specific information, tailored to your precise requirements. This system eliminates errors before they reach the laboratory, saving the time of your professional staff and vastly reducing the risk that an incorrect test will be undertaken.

Can RICS integrate with Laboratory Analytical Automation Systems?

Yes. For example, RICS broadcasts to the Bayer HealthCare Diagnostic’s Centralink system via the ASTM1394 standard.

Can RICS integrate with LIS (LIMS) systems?

Yes. The level of integration depends on the openness of the LIS/LIMS being used. Typically, interfacing takes place via ODBC to the database backend.

Can data for all requests be entered prior to specimens arriving at the lab?

Yes. Typically, all requests scanned by RICS will be fully data-entered prior to arrival at your lab. Requests that arrive from smaller collection centres, such as small GPs without a RICS collection centre, will obviously not be scanned. In this case, the RICS SRA module will automatically mark the specimen as received and advise the operator to scan the form. Once scanned, the form will be prioritized based on specimen arrival time.

Can I view the pathology request form at any time?

Yes. Laboratory staff can display the form simply by bar-coding the specimen’s LabID into RICS. The image will then be displayed directly in the LIS, or via a link, depending on agreement with your LIS vendor.

Are the fields entered into the various stages configurable?

Not configurable by the user, but can be modified easily.

Is RICS configurable?

Yes. All commonly edited information—such as Tests, Centers, Users and so on—can be fully configured by the manager.

Can RICS be modified to provide a training module for new staff?

Yes. A module containing sample images can be created, such that new staff can work through the sample set and see their results after completion.

Can I use RICS without the multistage entry, only as an image capture, and queue to full data entry?

Yes.

Can I use RICS simply to archive forms?

Yes. Simply set your scanning request to “archive only” and RICS will not proceed to the data entry queues.

Can RICS handle add-on tests?

Yes. Add-on tests can be phoned in by the doctor and are generally entered straight into the LIS. RICS can print the request form so that additional notes can be added prior to rescanning. Any add-on paperwork can also be scanned into RICS for reference. (Please note that Medicare specifies what tests can be added, when, and what paperwork must be completed.)

Can RICS handle specimens?

Potentially. RICS currently records the time that specimens arrive in the lab, but does not record individual specimens. This could be enhanced to support specimen capture. Contact the DDI team for more information.

Can request forms be printed?

Yes.

Does RICS support industry standard barcode formats?

Yes. Code 39 is fully supported. Full support for Code 128 is expected by mid-2009.
